*This is a clip from one of my new poems*
"And we are so much more than music
We are the motion behind the melody
before the soul breaks
and spills into notes
So it comes as no surprise that we are noted
That we are noticed in the God designed melanin of our skin
That we are crowned Blues in the rhythm of a world
who has forgotten how to feel beyond a computer screen
So we scream in the way we walk like pain has never
weighed heavy on our souls
Like these concrete jungles have never eaten us alive
in front of our mothers
And turned some of our wayward fathers into crime scenes
that Justice doesn't seem to see
But still, we stand strong like miracles
We climb mountains in our sleep
that only bring us to more mountains
But where most would give up,
we plant mustard seeds of faith on our way up
And make foot stools out of any tragedy
that's trying to pull us down
From slavery all the way to the civil wars among our brothers,
We still know that we are so much more
than a "Cash Money" click
Or the "baddest bitch"
We are miracles...
From the crown of our heads
to the soulful beat in our feet
The fact that we still grow, breathe and exist
is an act of defiance
And for every stereotype others try to hang around our necks,
we produce a walking contradiction...
For every Lil Wayne, we give you a Malcolm X
For every Nicki Minaj, we give you a Sunni Patterson
For every Zane, we give you a phenomenal Maya Angelou
A Toni Morrison...
And some people still have the audacity to think
our days of strength are over
But no...because we are miracles”
